‘Scorpion’ season 2, episode 22 and the Happy – Toby ramifications

Mrs. Carter: Is a “Scorpion” wedding coming up in the near future?

We have to admit: We’re surprised to see the CBS show moving forward so quickly when it comes to the relationship between Happy and Toby. It’s exciting for sure, but atypical for a network that has a tendency to slow-play relationships as long as humanly possible. Take, for example, Deeks and Kensi on “NCIS: Los Angeles” waiting until season 6 to take the next step, or the relationship that really never happened between Tony and Ziva on “NCIS” in the way in which fans wanted it to.

Yet, the relationship between Happy and Toby started to surface back in “Scorpion” season 1, and this season, we’ve jumped into full-on dating territory. Not only that, but at the end of Monday’s episode “Hard Knox” Toby made it clear in a brief conversation to Sylvester that he is planning to get Happy an engagement ring. It’s a big move for the two of them since they have only been dating a short time, and it’s certainly fun to think about in terms of what sort of super-cool proposal Toby could come up with.

Does this mean that we could see a proposal this season? Let’s take a deep breath on that one before we get too excited. There are only two episodes left this season, and the Team may have some other immediate priorities, including some situations that put a few of their characters in danger. You can read the proposal talk in two different ways for now.

1. This is the show setting up something big that is happening in the next two episodes, and they wanted to give you something to look forward to.

2. This is the show giving Toby / Happy fans something to chew on for the remainder of the season while they deal with other matters. Even if the state of their relationship is not directly addressed, we’ll still have this moment in mind as a sign that Toby is thinking about their future together.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait until Monday to see in what direction the show decides to go.
