‘Dancing with the Stars 22 review: Jodie Sweetin, Nyle DiMarco, Von Miller hit the stage for Disney night

Von -

Disney night has always been one of our favorite theme weeks that “Dancing with the Stars” has put on, mostly because it really appeals to the sort of magic that the show likes to create in the ballroom. There are plenty of other weeks to be cheesy or super-emotional. This is nostalgic, and it captures some of that childhood energy that so many had when they first watched their favorite Disney movies.

How did the stars fare? As per usual, we’re going to have updates as the night goes on! We have a guest judge tonight in Zendaya, so there are four people handing out scores.

Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess — Jazz – “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin. Were the judges friendly to this routine? It was almost like in doing this style Antonia was able to forget about the technical requirements and just focus on fun. This was, both in terms of personality and hitting the moves, his best dance by far. Score: 35.

Marla Maples and Tony Dovolani — Waltz – “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Did Marla do this iconic song justice? We’d say it was a mixed bag. We did think that she nailed some of the lyricism of the dance, but it felt very much like she was struggling to really let go of the choreography and just enjoy it. She was nervous, and this was a step down from the start of the show. Score: 28.

Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd — Samba – “Trashin’ the Camp” from Tarzan. Did Nyle keep his momentum going? It’s amazing to see what Nyle can do without even hearing the music, but this is no charity case. Nyle can really dance, and he did some samba moves in here that we’ve barely seen some other Stars master over the years. Consider this great fun. Score: 34.

Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff — Jazz – “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins. Was this performance the right sort of medicine? Not really. It was more like the kind that left us a bad taste in our mouth. Doug tried, but this was off almost from start to finish and by the end of it, it was pretty clear that dancing is not his thing. Yet, he’s safe! Score: 24.

Kim Fields and Sasha Farber — Quickstep – “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book. Did this song make us wanna dance? It may at least be proof that we’ve underrated Kim for most of the season, given that she’s brought so much fun to almost everything that she’s done. Even though she’s not technically perfect, she’s just got that infectious energy about her! Score: 32.

Jodie Sweetin and Keo Motsepe — Cha Cha – “Try Everything” from Zootopia. Did this song capitalize on the “Zootopia” hype in the right way? The big problem was that there was probably too much “Zootopia,” and the product placement was a distraction in the dance. There was too much going on, and it led to one of Jodie’s weaker routines. Score: 27.

Ginger Zee and Val Chmerkovskiy — Foxtrot – “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast. Was this routine beautiful in its own right? We haven’t been sure what to make of Ginger as of late as a contender, but this really did solidify her as a contestant to watch out for! Really smooth and lovely choreography throughout here by Val. Score: 36.

Wanya Morris and Lindsay Arnold — Samba – “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. Was this dance powerful like the song? We actually heard Carrie Ann accuse Wanya of “over-dancing,” which was a little weird, but we do think that this was by and large a really good performance, and one that deservedly keeps him as a contender. Score: 35.

Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas — Quickstep – “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story. Were we smiling about this routine? Unsurprisingly, yes. Paige has the background and the athleticism to kill this competition. Great movement, and she did a proper quickstep as well. The longer she lasts, the more dangerous she will be. Score: 36.
