‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Margo Price performs ‘Hurtin’ (On the Bottle),’ ‘Since You Put Me Down’

SNL -Going into this week’s “Saturday Night Live,” we had no clue whatsoever who Margo Price really was. This isn’t meant as a slam to her, since we weren’t familiar with Chris Stapleton and he’s now a Grammy darling. Country music just is not the sort of genre we regularly follow, and even within that Price is still an up-and-coming star.

After watching her first performance on the show this weekend, it’s easy to see that she could become a player in the industry at some point in the future. She’s a great narrator, and that is probably more important in this genre than almost any other out there. Also, she’s got a pretty strong singing voice, and her musical sensibility is very much old-school country, the sort that you would hear in a Western wear store out in a small town circa 1992. This song is entitled “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle),” and while we’re not much of a country fan we can at least appreciate the effort that she put into this. Not only that, but we also definitely appreciate the fact that she performed live and had a full band around her. Yes, you would think that this would be standard operating procedure for this show, but very rarely does that turn out to actually be the place.

We’ll have a take on the second song later, so check back soon for that. Update: This second song was entitled “Since You Put Me Down,” and it was of that same sort of old-school country vibe. It was about heartache, and had a distinct two-step vibe that we could picture playing at any Western-themed bar out there. Personally, it sounded a little too similar to the first sketch; we’re going to have a hard time distinguishing them.

For those looking for a different style of music on the show, rest assured that Nick Jonas will bring some pop energy next week.
