‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 finale ratings: Negan’s arrival boosts numbers, but by how much?
It was to be assumed that the arrival of Negan on the season 6 finale of “The Walking Dead” Sunday night was going to provide a nice boost in the ratings. After all, he is a character who comic-book fans have been waiting to see for years, and to go along with that he is played by an extremely popular actor in Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
But how much precisely did the show rise? Well, it was enough for it to be the third-highest rating of season 6, but not enough for it to match the past couple of finales. The show as a whole drew a 6.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic along with 14.2 million viewers, which is easily enough to make it the #1 show of the week, the month, and even the year so far outside of sports and specials. With that in mind, we don’t think AMC is too bummed about it being below past finales; they still have the biggest show on TV.
The larger question right now is whether or not the cliffhanger ending makes any real impact on whether or not viewers opt to watch moving forward. When you look back at the Glenn fake-out earlier this season, there were many people who were threatening to never watch the show again. If there are some out there who followed through, they were such a minimal population that we cannot cite any change in the ratings to them. The numbers still ended up rising in the midseason finale regardless.
