Finale Forecast: Can ‘Blue Bloods’ season 6 offer up significant shake-up?
If there is one show on network TV that is the perfect model of consistency in all regards, it has to be “Blue Bloods” on CBS. We don’t even know how you can say otherwise when there are so many clear signs of what it brings to the table. Every week, it gives you some sort of Frank storyline regarding an ethical police dilemma, while for other characters such as Jamie or Danny Reagan, you see them out in the field working on cases. There’s always a family dinner, and Tom Selleck’s mustache remains as fantastic as always. Even when you look at the ratings, the sixth season is down less than 4% from season 5 in the 18-49 demographic, which was in turn down only 8% from season 4. That season was almost even with season 3. This is a remarkable sort of retention.
With all of the evidence in front of us, it’s very clear that this is a show that doesn’t need to do anything big to keep its viewers around. With that being said, should it? That’s something we would like to explore further in this Finale Forecast feature.
How it could end – CBS has not yet released official details on its May 6 season finale, but we know that before then Danny’s serial-killer rival is going to return. It is certainly possible that this finale is the final showdown, given that this story has been interwoven through the past year or so; of course, it’s also possible that a new mythology is constructed that serves as some sort of cliffhanger. What we assume for now is that the drama will be taken up a notch, and while there’ll a little closure, there’ll also be a reason to watch season 7. We don’t expect anything befalling Frank or Danny like we saw on “The Walking Dead” Sunday night.
How it should end – There is clearly nothing wrong with working to have the same sort of exemplary career as Frank Reagan and his father before him. Both have done great things as commissioner, and both have faced many hurdles. Yet, is that still the right path for Danny and Jamie? We would like to see one of them presented with an alternative route. For example, what if we ended up seeing a situation where Jamie was offered at this point in his career a chance to go somewhere else, where he could make more money and command more respect? We’d like to see, even if it is temporary, an expansion of this universe in some way.
As for another possibility, how about just furthering something along romantically with Jamie and Eddie? We’re about to enter the seventh season, and while we did praise the show earlier for its consistency, the reality is that it’s not going to be around together. Pairing them up would allow for another face at the table, and the chance to explore some new subjects aside from just law enforcement.

Blue Bloods is always the highlight of my week. Of course, I’m always rooting for more Bridget Moynahan every week.
