‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7 spoilers: Ian Somerhalder hints at character death

Salvatore -

The seventh season of “The Vampire Diaries” is going to be returning to The CW after a lengthy hiatus on Friday night, and we wish that we could come back reporting good news and little else.

However, we’re instead bringing you this: The regular and recurring cast could be narrowed down by the time we make it to the end of the season. This is confirmed by Ian Somerhalder, who tells TVLine that the show is  “losing some beloved characters, which is always hard.” As for who this person is … of course we’re not going to say here! This is definitely one of those things that falls firmly in the “watch and see” camp, since the last thing that we want to do is spoil something like this in advance.

With this being said, we do have to caution with this: Whoever dies this time should actually be dead. We hate to say that and potentially deprive someone of work, but the reality here is that this and many other shows have been in the fakeout business for far too long. We’ve already got some characters who are practically immortal, and you’ve also going Elena off cursed somewhere until Bonnie dies. (It’s with that in mind that we’d be shocked if Bonnie goes — we haven’t heard of any inclination that Nina Dobrev is returning to the show.)

There is, in the end, something great and beautiful that can come out of a character death: It can remind you of how much you care about these fictional people. We’ll personally never forget about when Alaric first died on the show, given that it ended up being one of the most emotional moments that we’ve had watching the show through seven years so far. We don’t want to say that it was negated by him returning, but we don’t watch it back with the same heartache anymore.
