ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5, episode 16 review: The Susan Ross secret revealed
When we were promised a big Susan Ross secret on “Scandal” Thursday night, we were more than a little bit convinced that it was going to be a big one. These suspicions were certainly validated and then some as we moved further and further into this episode.
Ultimately, we learned that there was a time in which the tables were turned for the Vice-President, and she was the one in David Rosen’s shoes cheating on a significant other. Maybe that is why in part she was able to detect it so easily. While her husband John (now deceased was away), she got pregnant after being with another man in Ronnie … and eventually ended up passing off the child as John’s.
While Olivia Pope wanted to ensure that Ronnie was there so that he could testify to this relationship and give Mellie a huge upper hand in the election, there was a major complication that entered the fray, and in turn really rendered much of her plan impossible. As for how Ronnie ended up “hanging himself,” that is a great mystery for the time being.
We have to say that in terms of quality, we’ve really enjoyed this story and then some. It’s brought a lot of interesting dynamics to the table, in between Susan’s past and her history with David Rosen at this point. It also does make it even clearer as to what the biggest flaw with the show: It’s best in election cycles, and there are only so many that the show can really air. With that, maybe this show is better off in small doses. Grade: B.
