‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3, episode 14 review: A powerful look into Mack’s past
Over the past couple of weeks in particular, “Agents of SHIELD” has proven yet again that while it may have plenty of people with powers, it is better when they slow things down and remind us of the humanity of these people.
During Tuesday night’s new episode “Watchdogs,” we had what was for the most part an excellent showcase of Mack anchored by Henry Simmons. We got a chance to see his brother (Gaius Charles), and learn a little bit about what he’s trying to protect. It have us some insight into why he keeps on fighting, and where we could see this story go from here. Wouldn’t it be great to see Charles on the show again? There was something especially fun about his scene with Daisy Johnson.
Mack faced some continual distractions during his time with his brother, mostly because of what appeared to be an attack by an anti-Inhuman task force. As it turned out, though, there was more at play here as the entire scheme may have been in part a setup on Hydra and Gideon Malick’s part in order for them to get what they wanted. While this was a simple story at heart, there was a strong twist at the core of it.
Along the way, there were also a few nice, tender moments for the characters. Also, we had Coulson starting to try to determine whether or not Lincoln truly has what it takes. He’s adapting, and that includes not always being chief recruiter.
In the end, this was an episode that we’re going to hold onto for a while, mostly because of how intense it was at times and personal at others. Episode Grade: B+.
