‘Dancing with the Stars 22’ review: Jodie Sweetin, Nyle DiMarco, Von Miller look to build in week 2

Jodie -

The first week of “Dancing with the Stars” is almost always the age-old “getting to know you” time where you start to figure out who everyone is and how they are going to fare in the ballroom with these new conditions and stresses placed upon them. The second week is all about seeing how they stabilize. These are people who, at this point, have gotten their feet wet, and now have to get into the rhythm of doing this every week. Some will improve, while others may stumble.

We’ll be updating this article throughout tonight’s show; meanwhile, we’ll be back at the end of the night with the results.

Jodie Sweetin & Keo Motsepe – Samba – “Bun Up the Dance” by Dillion Francis, Skrillex. Did Jodie emerge from the middle of the pack? Ultimately, we’re not sure that we will be saying that she did at the end of the night, but this was a solid samba regardless. There were some very-good moves in here, and it should keep her around. Score: 21.

Marla Maples & Tony Dovolani –Argentine Tango – “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran. Did Marla bring the intensity to this routine? We’d say that she probably had the technique but not enough of that. This routine was decent, but where was the fire? We thought Marla would use more of her acting skills this season, but this needed a tad more character. Score: 20.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Geraldo Rivera & Edyta Sliwinska – Salsa – “Ran Kan Kan” by Tito Puente. Can Geraldo improve on a fairly-weak first performance? Not exactly. This was awful no matter how you slice it. Gerlado tried to have a sense of humor with the Donald Trump impression, but he has no real sense of timing and his foot’s clearly bothering him. Score: 13.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Paige VanZant & Mark Ballas – Salsa – “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar featuring Lucenzo. Will Mark’s injury hold Paige back? Not exactly, since Alan Bersten stepped in from the troupe for this week. We mentioned that it wouldn’t be long before Paige (who has some history with dance) became the frontrunner, and this strong routine is a step in that direction. Score: 24.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Antonio Brown & Sharna Burgess – Rumba – “Adorn” by Miguel. Will this be a great showcase of Antonio’s passion? Probably the worst thing about Antonio’s performance tonight was actually the edit, which had him come across as very cocky, than the dance itself, which needed more passion but was technically sound. Score: 19.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Kim Fields & Sasha Farber – Salsa – “Conga” by Gloria Estefan. Did Kim capture the fun of this classic dance song? It was a little bit of a case here where she may have been overscored the first time because she was fun, and this was a fall back to earth. Score: 19.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd – Rumba – “Stole the Show” by Parson James. Now that everyone knows how well Nyle can dance, can he keep the momentum? This was messier than the first routine, but once again Nyle came out and was this huge surprise the moment that he started dancing. One of his biggest issues here was just a lift, though, and those won’t be around too much. Score: 20.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Mischa Barton & Artem Chigvintsev – Cha Cha – “Pata Pata” by Miriam Makeba. Will this be a bounce-back week for Mischa? Not really, and it makes us feel bad to say that since you can tell how much she wants to do well at this. Hopefully, she will be able to let loose soon. Score: 15.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Von Miller & Witney Carson – Cha Cha – “Ain’t Too Cool” by LunchMoney Lewis. Can Von bring some crazy entertainment for the second straight week? Von’s a decent dancer, and we think that his personality is better suited for the show than Antonio’s. Now that we said that, we feel bad for doing the same annoying comparisons that the show is. Score: 20.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Wanya Morris & Lindsay Arnold – Salsa – “Echa Pa’lla” by Pitbull. Did Wanya and Lindsay bring a party to the ballroom? This was a lot of fun from start to finish. Great moves, great personality, and you can really see that Wanya is OWNING it on stage and is happy to be there. We’re not sure everyone else is. Score: 24.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Doug Flutie & Karina Smirnoff – Paso Doblé – “Buster Voodoo” by Rodrigo y Gabriela. Is Doug ready to execute another big comeback? This was a great routine for Doug; while the choreography was somewhat-simple, it allowed him to get much more comfortable on stage. Score: 20.

[ot-video][/ot-video]

[ot-video][/ot-video]

Ginger Zee & Valentin Chmerkovskiy – Samba – “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. Will Ginger continue her run as a surprising frontrunner? It was a solid end to the show, but it wasn’t necessarily the fantastic start to the show she had last time. Score: 21.
