NBC’s ‘The Voice’ season 11: Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys to replace Christina Aguilera, Pharrell

There’s another big change coming to “The Voice” this season, and it goes like this: For the first time, there will be two female coaches on the panel!

First, let’s begin with the biggest shocker to us of all: Miley Cyrus is coming aboard! The “We Can’t Stop” singer, who is a key adviser for the knockout rounds this season, confirmed on Twitter that she will be a coach in the fall. (Technically she said “judge,” but she’ll get the terminology soon enough.) We imagine that Miley didn’t come cheap to NBC, but at the same time the show needed some sort of creative shake-up as the ratings have sagged somewhat over the course of the past year or so. Miley’s appearance also means that Gwen Stefani, who has done the show the past two fall installments, will not be returning for at least the time being.

This is, at least to us, a super-smart move. While Miley can be outlandish, we also think that she’s very smart and calculated. She’s also been great anytime we’ve seen her on talent shows in the past in terms of giving honest feedback, something that other coaches have shied away from.

As for the other coach, TheWrap reports that none other than Alicia Keys will take the spot of Pharrell on the panel. Stylistically, we do agree with the choice since you want to have someone with more of an R&B / soul background on there. We don’t know if she’ll generate headlines in the way that Miley will, but she’s certainly qualified and should have plenty of artists begging to be on her team.

Both Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have also re-upped their contracts, and will return for season 11.
