‘Togetherness’ canceled by HBO after two seasons

HBOIt looks like the cast of “Togetherness” will not be together anymore following the end of this current season.

In a statement today, HBO confirmed that they have effectively canceled the series from Steve Zissis along with Jay and Mark Duplass after two seasons on the air, and they issued the following comment to go along with it:

“Although we have decided not to proceed with another season of Togetherness, we look forward to continuing our strong creative collaboration with the talented Jay and Mark Duplass.”

We do hate to use the word “canceled” for a quality show, mostly because that signals that the show did something wrong most of the time. (We also only use it when a show doesn’t really get a chance to plan for a series finale in advance.) With “Togetherness,” you really have to blame climate more than anything else. Maybe five years ago the show would’ve found more of an audience, but comedy in general has become so fragmented that you almost need a grade-A gimmick in order for someone to pay attention to you. This show was strictly solid, and didn’t really have anything that would cause people to pay attention in the way that other HBO comedies like “Girls,” “Veep,” or “Silicon Valley” do.

Ultimately, we are sad about it, but we don’t think that this is the last time that we will be talking about a show with Jay and Mark Duplass involved. They’ll get another shot at some point. Take a look at Mark’s message on Twitter below for more of his thoughts.
