CBS waits on ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Code Black’ season 2, ‘Criminal Minds’ season 12 renewals

Supergirl -

While CBS made a huge number of big renewals earlier Friday, there are a few surprises in the midst that certainly did surprise us on some level.

Specifically, let’s start with “Supergirl,” which despite all of the relentless hype and the upcoming crossover with “The Flash,” was not renewed for a second season. What gives? It could be easy to proclaim that this is a reason to sound the alarm, but we’re not so sure on that just yet. After all, you do need to remember / consider a few different things, beginning with the fact that the network really hasn’t ordered new seasons of many of their first-year shows, including “Limitless,” “Code Black,” and “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.” They also have not ordered more of second-year show “CSI: Cyber,” but that’s not really a shock since Ted Danson seems to be moving on to a new comedy project.

As for the lack of a renewal for now for “Criminal Minds,” we’re just blaming that mostly on the studio and the cast. CBS owns at least part of many of the shows that they broadcast, but this is more of an ABC production and there are also many cast negotiations that could be attached to it. Longtime star Shemar Moore has just departed, but there are still many original cast members still around.

We imagine that we’ll figure out some more news on all of these shows in the near future; with “Supergirl” in particular, it wouldn’t be a shock if something more was revealed following the big crossover to draw some more buzz to it in the future.
