March Makeovers: How can ‘Saturday Night Live’ improve itself?

SNL -With there being no new episode of “Saturday Night Live” coming on the air until we get around to April 2, isn’t this the perfect time to discuss prospective changes? For the most part, we do think that this is a show that takes a lot of unjustified abuse, since the majority of the things that it does are smart ideas in theory. Not every sketch or idea is going to land, but that’s a part of the game! This is live comedy, and with that you have to expect a certain element of unpredictability entering the mix.

With that being said, there are still rather clearly a few separate things that need to be worked on, and that is what is worthy of this discussion now in our March Makeovers series.

No more musical monologues – When was the last time that you ever saw one that was good? They all seem to be mostly an excuse for a host to sing, and it’s like every one of them has never seen the show before and thinks that it’s going to be clever.

Less Trump – We do understand that at this given moment, he may be the easiest target in the history of comedy. However, just because something is easy does not necessarily mean that it is the right move to make. There are so many other great targets to go after both in politics and elsewhere. We’re not being political here; we’re just tired of seeing Trump anywhere and everywhere.

More familiar “Weekend Update” characters – For example, why haven’t we seen much of Drunk Uncle or Jebidiah Atkinson this season? Can Vanessa Bayer bring back her romantic-comedy expert Daisy Rose? Can Kate McKinnon be in at least half of them a year?

Things to retire – Never do “Girlfriends Talk Show” ever again, and we’ve had our full of the silent hipster theater performance one, as well. We hate to say it, but we may also be nearing the end of a certain sketch featuring some one-time “adult” stars.

More Aidy Bryant – Doesn’t anyone else feel like she’s been a little lacking as of late?
