‘The Vampire Diaries’ future beyond season 8 uncertain, says Ian Somerhalder

Salvatore -

Earlier this month, longtime fans of “The Vampire Diaries” were thrown what was more than likely a rather welcome lifeline when they had a chance to learn that the show is coming back for an eighth season. With that being said, we are starting to near that given point in its run where it starts to become unclear just what the future could hold. Ratings are lower, cast contracts will become more expensive over time, and The CW already has a crowded field when you consider just how many programs that they have to air over the course of a night.

While Ian Somerhalder told TV Guide recently that he is not sure if season 8 will be the show’s last, he was rather reflective on where the journey has taken him and his fellow cast members to date:

“Can you believe this sh–? F—ing seven years! Isn’t that crazy? Because very few people I know have closed out a series – well, we’re not closed out yet. We have another year now… [This morning] I just thought, ‘Wow, man. You just navigated seven years, 154 episodes of television.’ And by the time it’s done, it’s going to be 176 episodes, by this time next year.”

Our feeling right now is that the show could be best suited to end next year just because you want to end things with a bang, and you can have that established tension going into the run. The last thing that we want is for someone, whether it be the show producers or The CW, to figure out that the series needs to end weeks before it does and there is not enough time for a proper ending.
