‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3, episode 13 review: A spy’s farewell
Tonight, “Agents of SHIELD” delivered what can be best described as emotional gut-punch and then some, thanks to an event that we (really) should have saw coming a mile away: Bobbi and Hunter going on the run, and leaving the team behind.
Ultimately, we knew that the two characters could be getting a spin-off, and with that, the show had to figure out a way to write them out. We were just shocked to see it happen so early. Maybe producers were starting to realize that they ultimately had way too many cooks in the metaphorical kitchen, and they weren’t going to be able to service all of these characters in the long-term. Therefore, they were better off giving them the “spy’s goodbye” now as opposed to some point in the future.
Ultimately, none of this changes that this was emotional, and not an easy thing to get through at times. Bobbi and Lance did what they do best (take out their targets), but in the process they basically had to separate themselves from SHIELD and really everyone. They’re now without a home. It’s a great setup for a spin-off!
As for what we thought about the episode as a whole, it was certainly compelling. Are we a little bummed out about the lack of SHIELD proper or the Inhumans this week? Sure, but this was a story that really needed to be told to propel the story forward. Grade: B+.
