‘Doctor Who’ officially coming to Amazon after departing Netflix

Doctor Who -The long-standing rumors and reports are indeed true: “Doctor Who” in its present form are officially heading to Netflix.

Today, it was announced that BBC Worldwide North America and Amazon have reached a deal for the entirety of the show revival’s first eight seasons to be available on the Prime service starting on Sunday; this includes all Christmas Specials. The ninth season and the most-recent “Husbands of River Song” special will debut in the fall.

There is no word just yet on if Amazon will eventually have any of the classic version of the series, which Netflix had portions of prior to the Netflix deal expiring. We’re still super-bummed about that, given that this to us still remains the strongest streaming platform out there. With that being said, can you really blame the distributor for looking elsewhere if Netflix wasn’t offering them the right deal? This is something that they can use to further a relationship with Amazon, which is becoming more and more of a competitor over time.

If you are fairly new to the “Doctor Who” franchise as a whole, rest assured that you are going to have plenty of time in order to catch up. The new season is not slated to premiere until 2017, so even when the ninth season premieres on Amazon in the fall there’ll still be plenty of time to watch it. Let’s just hope that it meets most of the expectations that we’ve got for it moving forward and then some.
