‘The 100’ season 3: Alycia Debnam-Carey talks reaction to Lexa death
It feels like an understatement at this point to say that there was a reaction to what happened to the Lexa character on “The 100” season 3. We’ve seen numerous fan accounts and Tumblr posts express their outrage over not just the end of the character’s life, but also the larger trend of LGBTQ characters getting killed off rather than having anything resembling happy endings with a character identified as a love interest.
While she has been relatively quiet since Lexa’s death episode “Thirteen” aired, Alycia Debnam-Carey was very present this weekend at PaleyFest promoting her role on “Fear the Walking Dead” season 2. Speaking to IGN, she reacted further to just how upset fans were over her exit — but also made it clear that her death was not created to deliberately hurt fans or with any malice at all:
“I’ve never experienced anything like that before. It was amazing to see such a… People come together and really fight for something that they were passionate about. I saw it was trending all over the place and that’s an incredible thing … I just really hope that people know that it was never a negative thing from anywhere – from the writers or on set or from me. That this character was always a collaboration. Always done with love. You know, I had personal obligations in my own life [to Fear the Walking Dead] and it just was that way. It was a creative choice and it was nothing really more than that. I know obviously that it’s hard when there are social issues going on and maybe they were dealt with in an insensitive way for some people. And I hate that people feel like that. That’s really awful if people feel ostracized or targeted but any attention that can be drawn to it is a great thing and moving forward is always great.”
Ultimately, our feeling is that Alycia will attract many viewers to “Fear the Walking Dead” this season thanks to “The 100,” and hopefully fans of hers find some enjoyment in seeing her over there. That’s nothing that really can be done to erase the hurt that some people feel over the end of Lexa’s story, even if she does make some sort of appearance later this season, as has been rumored.
