NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Nate Butler, Shalyah Fearing, Tamar Davis, and other battles
The Battle Rounds are now in full swing on “The Voice,” and that means one thing more so than anything else: Getting to hear some contestants really try to push themselves to the next level. There were some great numbers in here, though nothing really was effectively in changing our stance as to how this show is horrifically drawn-out for really no reason at all. Too. Much. Filler.
Tamar Davis defeats Shalyah Fearing, “Lady Marmalade” (Team Christina) – If there is something we can say about this performance, it is that it was really cool to watch Patti LaBelle be there to advice these two on a performance of her own song. Both are talented, but this was a situation of talent versus ambition. Shalyah’s still raw, which is why Tamar was Christina’s choice. However, Pharrell stole Shalyah, and her time continues.
Mary Sarah defeats Justin Whisnant, “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” (Team Blake) – A fairly solid performance all around, but we don’t think that the judges have an incentive in stealing country singers at the moment. They already know that Blake has a lot of them, and competing with his fans in that avenue would be tough. We feel for Justin, but Mary was a worthy winner.
Nick Hagelin defeats Jessica Crosbie, “Electric Feel” (Team Pharrell) – This one surprised us for a few reasons. We didn’t think either one of them was necessarily fantastic, but we’d put Jessica slightly above Nick. Well, that didn’t happen, and then after that Pharrell ended up picking her anyway. Then, Jessica was stolen.
Kata Hay defeats Chelsea Gann, “I’m the Only One” (Team Christina) – We don’t really get this one. Kata’s not a polished vocalist at all, but it seems like she gets a little bit of a pass on that because she’s a huge personality and makes good TV. Hey, maybe they’re changing the premise of the show?
Nate Butler defeats Natalie Yacovazzi, “Hollow” (Team Adam) – This is a really interesting battle since they are very interesting styles, and we’re intrigued by Adam’s choice here. We’re not entirely sure just how he will fare in the next phase of the competition, but at the same time we’re rather intrigued to find out.
Hannah Huston defeats Maya Smith, “Elastic Heart” (Team Pharrell) – Really strong battle, but there was a little bit of drama that was taken out of it by knowing almost from the jump that there was going to be a steal. Christina steals Maya.
