ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5: Kerry Washington credits Twitter for show success
The fifth season of “Scandal” may not have some of the ratings that it once did, but it still feels pretty hard to deny its impact on ABC. It’s one of the network’s highest-rated shows, and it is crazy to think that at one point, this was a show that seemed like it was in danger of not getting renewed.
So how did it become such a big success, given a relatively-humble start? In a rare moment that actually shows the value of live-tweeting, Kerry Washington really credits Twitter for the success. Here is what she had to say in a recent chat at SXSW, per Entertainment Weekly:
“Shonda is my social media she-ro … While we were filming the first season, I emailed Shonda and said ‘You’re the boss, could you ask the whole cast to live tweet it so that they all join in because they’ll feel like they have to?’ I truly believe that we wouldn’t have had a second season if it wasn’t for that engagement.”
“Scandal” may be in some ways the pioneer of the live-tweet, which is something that we have since seen a wide range of different shows do to varying success. For the most part, we enjoy it when people are doing it … with the major exception being that there are some shows in which it looks obvious that actors are being forced to do it for the sake of getting higher ratings. We’re not nearly as much of a fan of it when it feels like you are just getting a form of obvious pandering.
