March Makeovers: Can ‘Mistresses’ season 4 be turned into something more?

Mistresses -There are not many opportunities that we have here at CarterMatt to discuss “Mistresses” in March, and the reasoning for that seems pretty darn clear. After all, the ABC series is currently off the air, and details are rather sparse when it comes to the upcoming fourth season.

One of the biggest questions that we do think the show faces is this: How do you keep the adhering in some way to its central premise, while also allowing it develop and evolve? This is something that there is no clear answer to, which is what we’re here to try and piece together in our March Makeovers article series. Based on what we saw through season 3, the show does have some growing up to do still.

What went wrong – Through season 3, it felt like only a certain percentage of storylines really got into gear. Of course, the whole murder of Luca is the sort of crazy-dramatic stuff we expect from this show, and Calista was a good character to introduce to show that not every friendship exactly works out as planned. Does the whole plot feel somewhat useless in retrospect given that Jennifer Esposito doesn’t seem to be a permanent part of the show? You can argue that, but we’re not necessarily going to say that definitively right now.

To us, the bigger problem was that two stories in particular: Joss’ romantic life and April’s storyline in general, really stalled out in season 3. There were a few small things here and there that were interesting, but compared to a murder case and also Karen’s three-way romance, they were blips on the radar. We don’t often encourage this for primetime shows, but “Mistresses” needs to be full crazy all the time to be the most effective.

How to fix it – Let’s start with devising something really scandalous and juicy for April to get into. We don’t want to always see these women doing immoral things, but remember what the title here is! It’s time for her to have some really bonkers stuff going on in her life that make her friends question whether or not she is the right person to spend time with.

From here, how about some new recurring characters who are destined to bring about trouble? Other than Calista, most of the newbies in season 3 did not really bring about much in the way of massive shockers. We’ve already seen Harry’s sister technically, but she’s the closest ting to a new character we got coming up.
