NBC’s ‘The Voice’ preview: Malik Heard auditions to ‘Chains’

VoiceMonday night’s new episode of “The Voice” is going to be yet another edition of the Blind Auditions, and we’d say that the hopefuls have their work cut out for them right now given the quality of work we’ve seen on the show so far. (For those of you complaining about it, we’ve been watching the British version and that talent hasn’t even come close to matching up so far.)

In the video below, Dallas native Malik Heard comes out with a smooth, pretty pitch-perfect rendition of the song “Chains” that got turns from both Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams. We’d give Adam Levine and Blake Shelton flack for not turning, but at the same time neither of them probably had much of a shot here. This is so much more up Christina and Pharrell’s alley. He actually reminds us a little bit of Matthew Schuler, one of the better singers to ever be on Christina’s team over the years.

As for the deliberation, we dig the back-and-forth here between Christina and Pharrell because you never really see the “Happy” singer get all too aggressive. Here, though, you can tell that he does really want Malik, and tries to sell him on some of his producing credentials. The funny thing is that Heard drops Justin Timberlake as one of his biggest musical influences, and that is someone who both Christina and Pharrell know very well. They’re pretty evenly matched here when it comes to what they bring to the table, and it’s all ultimately up to personal preference.
