March Makeovers: Can ‘Castle’ season 8 start to establish consistency?
Before getting too far into this edition of our March Makeovers article series, let’s start by conceding the following: “Castle” has become a far better show in the second half of season 8 than it was in the first half. However, it’s still not at the point that the show was in its glory days.
If we look back at the parts of the show we enjoyed the most, we’d probably tell you between seasons 3-5. That’s when the Castle – Beckett relationship was really developing, before some of the crazier bits of mythology such as Rick’s disappearance, and also before there were so many creative shakeups. We do think that some of the ideas that executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter have thought up are fun and interesting, but there are a few glaring issues standing in their way of reaching their full potentially.
Maybe over the course of the next few hundred words we won’t end up actually accomplishing much of anything, but we’re certainly going to do our best to try identifying some of the problems, and discussing what can be done to turn them around.
What’s going wrong – We begin with what is to us the biggest issue with season 8 more so than LokSat, Rick’s disappearance, or even the separation: Castle and Beckett are simply not spending enough time together. The dynamic between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic is what made the show so popular in the first place, and for whatever reason their screen time together seems significantly less this season. We haven’t done any sort of scientific study on it or anything, but given that we’ve had a full episode without Beckett and a premiere that was very light on her, we have to imagine that it’s far less.
Due to Castle and Beckett spending less time together, some of the cases have been a little more sprawling and unfocused. We’re not going to complain so much about the whole breakup thing anymore; we’ve already done that, and we actually think the pretend-breakup is a twist that has spawned some good comedy. Sure, we don’t think logically it really matters since Rick would be a target if he’s married to her or not, but we’ll give ourselves up somewhat to the convention. The biggest issue at play here is a structural one more so than anything pertaining to what the cast is doing or the premise of some cases.
How to fix it – Some other Makeovers have taken a little more precision to identify issues, but here it really feels as simple as just find a way to have the two work together. Why can’t private eye Richard Castle be a police consultant, and at least do more work with Beckett at the station if she’s not out on the field? You can use Alexis and Hayley as his liaisons, and then Ryan and Esposito as Beckett’s eyes and ears in the field. Also, more Lanie! We hear that she may have some good stuff coming up, and it’s about time since she’s an important part of the show that’s been a little bit marginalized.
The one other thing that we’ll say at the moment is simply this: If the show does figure out a way to cut down on some of its more out-there elements like the disappearance and LokSat, we think the case-of-the-week format really suits it the best with a few larger story elements thrown in htere.

What didn’t sit well with the fan base, was they be required to dumb down in accepting that stupid separation. The fans were asked to ignore the myriad holes in that plot.

Hawley has his own agenda and that is to “repilot” the show as he said in a previous interview, thereby completely destroying everything Marlowe created and what fans have loved. He just doesnt get it, nor does he care, as he also stated in previous interview about not caring about fan reactions. The only way to solve the problems with this show is to return to clever writing, Castle and Beckett together as a married couple and crime fighting team but the showrunners have no desire to fix the mess they created

I would not be surprised if Fillion and Katic and the people who manage them have something to say about Hawley’s strategy and future working arrangements now that Lee is gone and their contracts are up. This season has not contributed anything positive to either actors brand.

The damage is done, the question is how do you undo it. Beckett the darling of the series was made a shrew without any consideration for her husbands feelings, and conversely Castle lost his backbone, and became a sniffling toad. Their reconciliation was perhaps the dumbest piece of writing in the eight years of the series. I don’t know how to right the series once you’ve throughly trashed the two lead characters and lost the magic. I’m sure the two writers are trying but the spark is gone, this ship has sailed.

Castle has been a very simple show with a very simple formula for success, up until this season that is. Put more of Fillion and Katic on the screen working together – no phone calls, video conferences or stand-ins. They have the best rom-com chemistry of any acting couple in decades. As individual actors they REACT to each other differently, more successfully, than with some imagination tricks. (I get they each want more time off to spend their money, but the job is the job.) So if you want more people to watch have them really work together more, as they did before.
TPTB could also stop digging the whole they are in – no season ending cliffhangers, no LokSatish story lines, stick to the COTW, make Alexis likable again or drop her. Make Castle more predictable. Give the fans certainty a la NCIS and a return to the Caskett relationship of early seasons.
Good piece.

There have been four long story lines in Castle. The first two were Beckett’s mother’s murder and the Caskett love affair. Both of these were highly successful because they were written to make sense, they were touched on in nearly episode to keep the fans informed and interested and they involved Beckett and Castle being together. The last two long story lines, Castle’s disappearance and LokSat,have been total disasters because they do not make sense, they are ignored by the producers and writers with little or no mention of any activity for months and months and they have driven Castle and Beckett apart unnecessarily rather than bring them together. One other long story line is too inane to even mention and that is Castle as a P. I. where Castle and Beckett are apart, where Castle is not really serious about being a P. I., and where he has essentially handed the business over to Alexis and Hayley who receive as much air time as Castle and Beckett. To fix it start out with one case, one episode story lines, Castle and Beckett together, openly, 24/7, and some interesting and exciting cases. Do not think that drawing out Castle’s disappearance, Caskett separation and LokSat invites interest and a growth in fan numbers. It is actually killing the show.

The question is there anything I would do to improve Castle? 1. Over 71% of the fans wanted this separation of Rick and Kate over by the 12th episode, it now episode 14, still not done. Just do it before episode 16, your own poll told you that. 2. The baby Castle, just do it and stop telling us that they do not have enough talent writes to do that, if they don’t hire some.3. Replace Hawley and his stupid Bold move.

I would like that to but from the sound of things it’s not gonna happen

I agree the writers are thinking of some kind of cliffhanger even though season 9 is not a guarantee stupid .

To use your words but turn them around a little differently – with the present show runners in charge in season 9 (if there is one) it is guaranteed to be stupid.

Buddy ,I agree Sometimes my wording is off a little. I also think this will be the last season for both Stana and Nathan. So hopefully TPTB wrap things up nicely for their departure.
