‘American Idol 15’ decides on most baffling theme ever for Top 6 week

American Idol -Apparently, “American Idol” really thinks that we love nostalgia in its final season. Like, really thinks. We don’t know how else you can look at the following bit of news and think that it is actually a good idea.

Today, Fox announced that for the upcoming top 6 performance show, you’re going to see the remaining contestants perform songs that are among the most-performed over the course of the entire series. Seriously. Expect to hear a bunch of people singing Whitney Houston, “Against All Odds,” anything by Stevie Wonder, and probably something by Alicia Keys in here as well. This is going to be a little painful, since the entire night will be so dated.

Here’s the reason why we created our self-proclaimed BURN IT songbook for ditties like “I Have Nothing” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”: They have been done SO many times on the show over the years that it is hard for almost any person to come up with a new interpretation for them that is interesting. Our memories are all attached to other people singing these songs.

Who knows? Maybe these songs are really easy to license for the show or something, but our feeling has always been to at least allow people the chance to perform something that could actually get them some attention online, and better enable them to be a star down the road. Who other than fans of the show will be writing about these songs?
