Oscars 2016: In Memoriam segment with Dave Grohl honors Wes Craven, Alan Rickman, others
Tonight in the midst of a very busy night at the Oscars was a segment that has become an annual tradition: In Memoriam. It’s a beautiful chance to honor some great work from people we have lost, but it in itself has become a source of controversy over time. After all, there is always going to be someone out there who certain people wanted to see included who was unfortunately not put on for time reasons. It’s never an intentional slight, but it happens.
This year, Dave Grohl chose to lead a montage of names set to the classic song “Blackbird.” The list when by far too quickly for us to be able to compile them all, but such notable names as Christopher Lee, Maureen O’Hara, Wes Craven, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Leonard Nimoy, and more were honored. It was a nice mixture, and we still like how they choose to give you soundbites from a few of the more-notable people.
As for snubs, it is hard for us to really name all of them off the top of our head, but Abe Vigoda comes to mind as someone who really should’ve been there. As we said, though, this is really a time issue more than anything else.
We do like the way in which the show set this up tonight, with Grohl offering a more subdued performance. We don’t really need someone trying to hit high notes or doing anything enormous in this segment; they are needed more to set the mood so we can reminisce.
