‘The X-Files’ season 11 will likely happen — just not immediately

X-Files -Even though Fox has not renewed “The X-Files” and may not choose to do so for a while, don’t take that as any sort of sign that they have no interest in bringing back the David Duchovny – Gillian Anderson series. The ratings were great, and the network would almost assuredly want more. The question here, for the most part, is figuring out the right time to do it.

Here’s what we are up against in part. Duchovny is a regular over on NBC’s “Aquarius,” which lasted for thirteen episodes in its first season. That show is coming back this coming summer, and for the sake of that network, will hopefully get better ratings than it did the first time around. Anderson, meanwhile, has done everything from “The Fall” to “Hannibal” to “War and Peace” over the past couple of years in addition to this show. Sooner or later, you have to think she would want a break, but we also know that she has a stage production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” coming up in the spring / early summer.

In speaking about his own communication with the actors to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Chris Carter had the following to say:

“I have been speaking with David pretty regularly. I think he’s game. I have spoken to Gillian less frequently, but I believe she would be game. So I’m just working around their busy schedules. They both have families. It’s another practical matter.”

Our feeling at the moment is to give the show some time off, and then maybe come back for the fall of 2017 / winter of 2018. That way, everyone gets reinvigorated and the show feels more like an event. We’re going to beat the “Sherlock” drum here as a comparable every chance that we can. The only real flaw with this would be that we had such a cliffhanger at the end of season 11, and you’d have to start a new season almost right after that before giving us some sort of time jump.
