‘Shark Tank’ video: Can Tutublue convince a Shark to bite on the concept?

Sharks -Finding a way to protect yourself from the sun has interestingly been a fairly common theme on “Shark Tank” over the years, as we’ve seen multiple products in one form or another enter the Tank with big dreams. Some of them have found a little success, while others have been turned away without a deal.

For Tutublue, what we’re dealing with here is a self-described one-piece “beach suit” designed with the purpose of being able to protect you from the sun. It is UPF50 an, per the pitch below, will keep away 97% of all harmful rays. It’s also sold in a wide array of different designs. The pitch is certainly enthusiastic enough, and we don’t have any doubt in the hustle or her belief that this is something consumers will want.

What we wonder right now is whether or not this would turn out to be the case on the open market. There are a couple of clear issues we see, starting with the notion that it doesn’t completely render sunblock useless, since you still have to apply it to your face. Also, you have to wonder if consumers will find them completely fashionable, since typical one-piece and two-piece bathing suits have been worn for so long. You have to convince people to think a different way, and unfortunately they don’t always do that.

One other thing we worry about here is price, with most of the adult suits costing well over $150. We don’t know how much the average customer in this demo pays for beachwear, but it feels like quite a hefty price tag. This could be a concern for a Shark looking to gauge a test market.
