TV Revivals: Is it time for ‘Deadwood’ to return to HBO?
It has been a long time since “Deadwood” went off the air over at HBO, and while we think that this network has a pretty sterling reputation for keeping good shows around to the very end as of late, they weren’t always that way. They messed up how they ended this show, given that it may be one of the best TV Westerns of all time.
So is there a way to bring it back, and does HBO have the resources in order to do it? That’s something we are definitely excited to discuss further in the latest edition of our TV Revivals series.
How it ended – Well, did it really end? Hearst went out of town unarmed, and it didn’t necessarily have the enormous killing spree in the closing minutes that you would have assumed. This is a show that tended to follow its own path, and not doing the expected here was a part of that. However, there were rumors almost a decade ago about there potentially being some sort of a movie tying things up, so we get a sense that this episode was crafted in some ways to be a precursor to other things.
How to bring it back – This, to us, doesn’t seem that hard. Many principal characters are still around, and we know that this could be a chance to create something that is every bit as epic as what longtime fans want to see. Even though it has been years since the show ended, this may be to the advantage of the show that it can skip forward so much time and show where everyone is and how they’re trying to move forward in the world.
Will it happen? – We think it’s pretty likely given the information that is out there at the moment. What’s the problem? The biggest one is schedule-related. Many of the cast members are off doing other things, and you have to figure out a way to round up all of these people and get them working at the same exact time. Our hope is that maybe we’ll get a movie in late 2017 or 2018, which would be plenty of time for everyone to carve out time and have one final story told in this universe.
