Spin-Off Goals: Could ‘Pretty Little Liars’ spawn another show with Mona?
When ABC Family first decided to spawn “Ravenswood” out of “Pretty Little Liars,” did anyone think that it was a terrible idea? It was a chance to get more play out of one of the most-beloved franchises on the network now known as Freeform, and do so with a character in Caleb who was for the most part very likable. The show had a supernatural element to it, and there were many an interest idea brought to the table.
Unfortunately, the ratings weren’t quite there, and as a result of that, the show had a fairly-quick cancellation. Since that time Ravenswood itself has been rather ghostly as a setting, and Tyler has become a key component of the flagship show once more.
What we’re here to figure out is if there’s a way to potentially launch a separate spin-off show in the future featuring any of the “Pretty Little Liars” major players, and if such an idea could work in the long-term.
Possible characters – We already know that Caleb did not work, and we don’t think many fans would appreciate it if you were to take away people from this show like Toby or Ezra. No more destroying potential couples for the sake of other shows! You also have to rule out parents (most of the show’s viewers are interested in characters between the ages of 15 and 29), and also people who have barely appeared on the show over the years. We think that there are some interesting possibilities out there including Lucas and Jenna, but for the sake of this article, let’s go ahead with Mona. She’s super-intelligent, still somewhat-mysterious, and she’s appeared in enough of the show that people would care.
The idea – Let’s say, for example, that it is finally sorted out whose side Mona is on, and she is firmly fighting for the good guys. As a result of that, why not eventually move here somewhere else, and then set up an entire show about her as a private investigator or even a federal agent? While there’s a whodunnit component to “Pretty Little Liars,” there’s not anything that combines this element of mystery with a more procedural format. Mona would be perfect for the gig, given that we’ve seen her break bad before, so to speak. She can get inside of the mind of many criminals.
Could this actually happen? – It’s definitely fun to think about, and we imagine that someone in Freeform’s headquarters is looking at ways to continue the show in the event that it ends after the flagship show is over possibly as early as season 7. Maybe Mona’s already done too many bad things, but we’ve seen there be a great capacity for redemption in this world.
In the end, we cannot really take this idea too seriously since we literally just came up with it, but we wouldn’t be shocked if another “Pretty Little Liars” spin-off came up someday.
