Oscars 2016 planning a change to limit thank-you’s in acceptance speeches
Have the Oscars finally figured out a way to stop the problem of acceptance speeches going on and on until the show runs for almost four hours? It’s at least something that they are considering at the moment with a new proposed change to the format.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the idea here is to allow for a scrolling list of names at the bottom of the screen during the acceptance speech, that way the winner can avoid the problem of forgetting someone while at the same time the show doesn’t have to cut off as many people with music.
Here is what producer David Hill said about the decision:
“Acceptance speeches have become a list of names and more often than not, time ran out before something could be spoken from the heart about the art, about the vision, about the experience, about the meaning of the moment … We needed to rethink how this could be a better experience for everyone.”
Ultimately, we like that they are at least trying something a little different to see if the problem can be corrected, and in all honesty, that’s a step in the right direction. We’re just not sure if we actually see this concept working out anywhere near as well as the Academy hopes, since you have to remember here that you’re trying to convince people to think very different about their speeches. Some people just want a thank-you on TV for their friends and family to hear!
