Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show: How did Coldplay, Beyonce, Bruno Mars do?

Super Bowl -There is nothing quite like the Super Bowl Halftime Show when you are looking for a spectacle, or at least a performance that is going to get plenty people talking. Going into the show, CBS and the NFL certainly raised eyebrows in announcing the roster: Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars. It’s an eclectic mix, but the British band is the real headlining act this time around. We don’t think any celebrity minds taking a back seat on the biggest stage of the year.

Going into the show, we imagined that what we would be seeing is a mixture of some of the bands biggest hits, and then also a track or two from their new album “A Head Full of Dream” to go along with some surprise numbers.

“Viva La Vida” – We started off with probably our favorite Coldplay song. Bright, colorful, and even in a way uplifting. Really strong.

“Paradise” – We’re honestly surprised that this song was chosen for the show. We liked it, but it was a little slow for the show.

“Adventure of a Lifetime” – This song was a much better choice for the game. Also, we’re worried that Chris Martin is going to fall on his face while spinning around and singing.

Bruno Mars, “Uptown Funk” – Love Bruno Mars, but it was like the Super Bowl just completely forgot that Coldplay was on the show. We expected at least a little more connective tissue here.

Beyonce, “Formation” – This is how you know you’re a boffo star: You perform what is considered a new song at the Super Bowl. At least there was a little “Uptown Funk” (connective tissue!) in here.

Chris Martin returns! – Okay, this is where we’re supposed to remember that this is Coldplay’s show.

Big finale – This was really nice. Set to “Fix You,” Coldplay was joined by the aforementioned special guests for a rousing, inspiring grand finale that included clips of past performances. It was about as moving as you’re going to find at the Super Bowl.

Overall, our only real issue is how Bruno and Beyonce came out of nowhere. Once they were integrated better, this was as good of a halftime show as we’ve seen in a few years.
