2016 Super Bowl commercials: Hyundai introduces us to Ryan Reynolds’ Ryanville
Who doesn’t want to live in a town full of people who look like Ryan Reynolds? “Ryanville” is the name of the new Super Bowl 50 commercial from Hyundai, which revolves around getting to see a pair of women drive through a town where every single person is the “Deadpool” actor.
So is this the best way to profile the car, or just a great spotlight for Reynolds himself? Let’s take a deeper look at that below.
The idea – The premise here is that the Hyundai Elantra is a car that “doesn’t get distracted,” which is useful when its drivers are in awe of how every person in the town is Ryan Reynolds. It’s an effective, simple idea that is super-visual and easy to play.
What works – Reynolds is smart casting since he’s totally in right now with “Deadpool” coming out. The women and men who love him as an attractive actor will appreciate this, while the comic-book fans will also get a laugh out of it. Also, we even like that Hyundai chose a very brightly-colored version of their car for the ad. It stands out.
What doesn’t – You could argue that the spot really doesn’t tell you much about the car, or why people should buy it over anything else on the market. Still, we don’t really think that it needs to.
Overall Grade – A-. We don’t think cars have the easiest time advertising during the Super Bowl, but what we like here is that Hyundai uses its celebrity really well, and it’s also short. Nobody during the game wants to watch a car on some scenic test track for 20 seconds.
