TV Revivals: Should ‘Oz’ continue the story of Tobias Beecher, Miguel Alverez and Ryan O’Reilly?
Not everyone was happy with the way that HBO’s “Oz” ended, but that never took away from the exciting journey to get there. This was a powerful show that brought us some incredibly compelling stories of different prisoners residing in the Oswald penitentiary. For a show that was airing in the late 1990’s, they took huge risks with killing off main characters like Simon Adabisi, as well as bringing us cringe-worthy moments we couldn’t look away from like Tobias Beecher’s revenge on Vern Schillinger in the gym. Let’s take a look at our latest addition to our CarterMatt “TV Revival” series – “Oz”: Do we need a different ending?
How it ended: Chris Keller killed himself and implicated Beecher in his death, but not before Keller poisoned everyone in the mail room forcing the prison to be evacuated. Was Beecher ever able to get out of jail or was he sent to death row for the “murder” of Keller? Ryan O’Reilly and Dr. Nathan shared a kiss, but how are they going to have a relationship with him in prison for life? Also, Miguel Alverez was told that no matter how hard he tries to turn himself around the head of the parole board will never allow him parole, so he went back to his cell and accepted his fate by diving deeper down the hole, but is he really destined to a life in prison?
How it could continue: “Oz” started us on a journey with Beecher and how his one mistake cost him his freedom and changed his entire life, but we never saw what happened to him after keller set him up for death row. We were mostly left to believe (in our opinion) that Beecher was never going to get out of the prison system, because the messaged seemed to be that once you are in, you can’t get out (look at what happened to Poet!), but even if that is the case, we want to know if Beecher is really going to death row for Keller’s “murder”. Beecher’s story needs a proper ending.
Should it be brought back: We want to see “Oz” back on the air, even if it’s just for a 6 part mini-season like “The X-Files” to give us an update on what’s happened to Tobias, Ryan O’Reilly, Tim McManus and Miguel Alverez. Lee Tergesen doesn’t seem to be working on any big projects right now (according to his IMDB page) and the same goes for Dean Winters and Kirk Acevedo, so we at least have availability of the actors on our side. Terry Kinney is working on a brand new show called “Billions”, but perhaps he can squeeze in a short season of “Oz”? We don’t need everything to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, but the series finale felt more like a season finale with a big cliffhanger leaving us wanting more.
Do you want to see what happened to Beecher or were you happy with the way “Oz” ended? Leave us a comment below and tell us if you want more “Oz”.

Was very disappointed with how Oz ended. I especially felt that Chris’s suicide felt very out of character. If they could basically undo much of the final episode, I’d love to see a continuation. But the show would feel so lacking without Keller. I usually hate when tv shows do this, but maybe Chris could have “miraculously survived” the fall and he’s coming out of a coma or something at the commencement of the series. Or the fall was “all a dream/halucination/psychotic break”.
I’d love to see more development of Torquemada, particularly in regards to his relationship to Alvarez. I’d love to see Alvarez regain his independence and identity.
I’m curious what they’d do with Querns and McManus. I was always partial to McManus (as he didn’t let a rapist and drug dealer run a prison ward), but if they’re both present, it’d create interesting tension.

I agree about Chris’ suicide. The ending felt kind of rush and felt more like a season finale then a series finale. nothing was tied up one way or another. Alvarez is such a great character I’d like more of him as well and for sure more McManus! I loved that he wanted to make a difference and no matter how difficult it was he kept trying to find new ways to reach the men.

Nope. My favourite tv show ever. But everyone’s dead apart from Miguel (including Beecher).

I was one of the few who liked the ending Fontana gave us, but I’m all in for a continuation of Oz and a look at what’s happened to Tobias and the others since we last saw them. Oh, and Tobias, sentenced to life, gets a new cell mate: Chris Keller’s twin brother. :->

I like your idea for more episodes, especially it gets us more “Keller” (even as a twin.)
