Ratings: ‘The X-Files,’ ‘Supergirl,’ and ‘Lucifer’ fall big; ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ rises
With Monday night being the Iowa caucuses, it was easy to envision many scenarios in which primetime ratings across the board declined. After all, people love to discuss politics, even if we’re talking just about a political process in one singular state.
While there were a few victors on the night, we’re feeling like we are going to be spending most of our time instead discussing the overall losers, especially when there’s possibility for adjustments down the road for networks that may have also preempted a show or two locally.
The good news – For now, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” scored a season-high 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which would definitely help its case for renewal if it sticks. We’re not sure that it will; we don’t know of any local preemptions at the moment, but that does not mean much of anything since they could still be out there. Our skepticism comes mostly from the fact that it posted a 25%+ gain in the demo in one week to the highest rating of the season.
The bad news – It’s really everything else. “Supergirl” (1.5) tied a series low, “The X-Files” came down to earth a little bit (2.6), and “Lucifer” (1.9) fell more than 20% from its debut. Granted, if all of these ratings hold we do still think these shows all have a good chance of still returning. The sky is not falling for anyone just yet, and that includes “Superstore” over at NBC, which has performed for the most part above expectations (1.4).
Meanwhile, someone may go ahead and put “Telenovela” (0.8) out of its misery sooner rather than later.
