Oscars 2016: Priyanka Chopra, Olivia Munn, Kerry Washington among latest batch of announced presenters
The 2016 Academy Awards are all about honoring movies, but today their latest batch of announced presenters certainly has a rather distinct TV feel to it.
Some of the names confirmed to be appearing include “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra, “Scandal” star Kerry Washington, former “Daily Show” correspondent and “The Newsroom” star Olivia Munn, “How I Met Your Mother” alum Jason Segel, former “The Office” star Steve Carell, and one-time “Pan Am” actress Margot Robbie, whose role on the ABC drama was one of her stepping stones to landing her breakout part in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Granted, many of these names are now better known for movies than TV, and in the case of Chopra in particular, she is a huge draw around the world thanks to her Bollywood career.
While we don’t want to do too much analysis of some of the names from the movie / industry side, it is interesting that Quincy Jones has been announced now as a presenter, given that there was talk that he would only accept a spot on the telecast if he could publicly criticize the Academy for their poor representation of minorities among their nominees. Then again, the Oscars seem to be almost welcoming the criticism at this point, given the already-announced changes to membership status and Chris Rock re-working some of his show to focus more on mocking the current issues surrounding the all-white list of nominees.
The Oscars are going to air on ABC on Sunday, February 28, and we certainly imagine that we will hear more about the nominees before we get around to it airing.
