Ratings Bubble Report: Will ‘Supergirl’ soar to season 2 renewal?
We have to admit that when we were a few episodes into the first season of “Supergirl,” we had a great concern as to whether or not this show was going to be getting a second season. Superhero shows come with a hefty price tag, and CBS has high expectations compared to The CW, where “Arrow” and “The Flash” both air.
However, since that time of concern it feels like “Supergirl” has found its footing. Is that enough to earn it a season 2 renewal? That is something we’re going to investigate further in our latest Ratings Bubble Report article.
The good news – We were concerned that the show was starting to level off at around a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic (a danger zone for CBS), but since that time we’ve see the show average close to a 1.9 in the month of January. That gives us hope that even when the temperatures warm outside the show won’t go any lower than it did during the winter. It’s a rare somewhat-serialized show for CBS, and it’s one that has a mostly-positive critical reception. Keeping “Supergirl” further allows the network to diversify its portfolio, and it and “Scorpion” can provide a solid one-two punch for many years to come while many other shows start to age.
The bad news – This is pricey for a new show, and we do think that if ratings fall to a 1.4 or lower, CBS may decide that they don’t want to continue to give this show a prime timeslot, let alone a second season. Also, they may have to wonder whether or not there is long-term sustainability in this particular genre given what they consider to be their bread and butter: Crime procedurals, and shows that tend to cater to an older audience.
Renewal odds – High. We’re not going to say “very high” since “The Voice” hasn’t premiered just yet, but for the time being we do think that “Supergirl” is doing a whole lot right and has won some viewers back, a rarity for a show in its first season. It’s vastly improved since the pilot, and we love that the writers are having fun with the source material.

This show will be renewed. There are lots of people who think it should be moved to the CW, but it isn’t going anywhere. You don’t have to be a fan of the show to see it is getting good ratings. Unless it starts getting 1.3’s or less for every new episode for the rest of the season. you will see it again this fall.
