‘House of Cards’ renewed by Netflix for season 5 (with a major twist)
The good news for all fans of “House of Cards” is now clear: You’re going to be seeing more of the show on Netflix for at least one year! The bad news is that in the process of this, you’re also going to be losing someone who has been crucial to its success.
In a statement confirming the season 5 renewal, Netflix and producers MRC make it clear that Beau Willimon is moving on to other projects, but the show is going to continue:
“Netflix and MRC owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Beau Willimon for his strong narrative vision for House of Cards over the show’s first four seasons … As an Academy Award nominated writer, he made his first foray into television and built a riveting and critically acclaimed series, establishing his place in TV history. The producers, cast and crew join us in wishing Beau the best in his next creative adventure.”
Yes, this show does still have an exceptional cast fronted by Kevin Spacey, but we’d be lying if we said we have zero concern over the change. The creator of a show is often the most important person of a team, and they can determine a variety of different things.
The good news is that this is Netflix, and they are the sort of people who can get almost any showrunner out there interested in coming aboard and helping out in some way. Our guess is that they’ll find someone more-than-capable to step into the role, and everyone will be happy by the time the dust settles and season 5 starts filming.
