‘Poldark’ season 2: On the premiere date ‘delay,’ potential third season

PoldarkIt has been a little while now since we’ve had an opportunity to discuss “Poldark” at length here at CarterMatt, so let’s start by touching on a subject that we really haven’t until now: The delay-of-sorts of the second season, which was at one point perceived to be coming in the spring. However, it was later made clear that the fall is a more realistic estimate.

One of the biggest reasons for the push-back of the show is to ensure that there is the proper time to finish it, given that this is a ten-episode second season as opposed to an eight-episode season 1. We’d say that this overall order now puts the BBC series in a similar spot to “Downton Abbey,” who aired eight episodes plus a feature-length Christmas Special that is often long enough for its episodes in its own right.

Speaking of “Downton,” we do wonder whether or not the end of that series is also a huge gain for “Poldark.” It is probably not lost on the BBC that there is an opportunity here to capitalize on that vacant timeslot for ratings. It also makes a great deal of sense, given that you also have to remember that “Doctor Who,” a steady fall performer for the BBC the past two years, won’t be returning with regular episodes until 2017 rolls around.

Now, the other order of business comes via the comments that star Aidan Turner made to the Telegraph about potentially returning to film in September for season 3, before seemingly catching himself and saying that he was “going to be in trouble” for saying that. Ultimately, the internet’s probably making too big of a deal about all of this. Turner is likely right, but the show doesn’t want to get ahead of itself. If the BBC renews the show, that is likely when they will start filming season 3. The only unfortunate thing with the network is that they won’t be able to gauge season 2’s ratings much before giving a greenlight, but they have to know that this is a huge hit for them by now.
