TV Underdogs: What could ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ season 3 do with Donna?
It has been quite a long time since we’ve written about AMC’s “Halt and Catch Fire,” but there is a perfectly good reason for that. The show has not been air since the summer, and in comparison to some other series on TV, it’s not one to routinely receive a lot of coverage during the off months.
Luckily, the TV Underdogs series we’ve been doing at CarterMatt all month does allow for such opportunities to pontificate / speculate on the future of the show through the lens of one character. For the sake of this article, we’re choosing Donna for reasons that we’re about to explain in full below!
Why she’s an underdog – Is there anyone else on the show more suited for the role? We’re not entirely sure that there is, largely because of just how much Donna has pursued the dream so far and what she’s been up against. She left a stable job, and has spent some of her time since working countless hours on making the Mutiny project happen. She’s also had a shock pregnancy, a sick / unfaithful husband, and the threat of Joe MacMillan and his devious ways metaphorically knocking at his door. She is someone who continues to have to fight and fight hard for what she wants, and going into season 3 she will have to fight even harder with the move to California.
Why we don’t see more of her – “Halt and Catch Fire” is an interesting show because it has become more and more of an ensemble over time. Kerry Bishe started things off more as a supporting piece to the puzzle, but since that time it’s felt as though the show is more of an ensemble. The main reason you don’t see more of Donna is simply because there has to be time for everyone, and in one way or another, each story is weighted.
Ways to see her more often – For one, how about seeing her completely take the lead on something? For most of the first two seasons we’ve heard often about how Cameron and Joe are the smartest people in the room, but without Donna, Mutiny never would have happened in the way in which it did. Also, how about putting her in a more enviable position, one where she finally starts to have more of what she wants and have some of the other characters fight to attain more of that? As much as we love underdogs, there’s something interesting to be said for seeing what happens with Donna from a position of greater power.
