‘The Fosters’ season 3, episode 11 review: Callie and Brandon’s understanding; Stef’s shocking news

Fosters -In the midseason premiere of Freeform’s “The Fosters” Monday night, it took very little time at all for us to realize just how quickly things are changing for the Adams – Foster clan.

Let’s start with what is the bad news: Stef could be facing major surgery after her mother decided to forward along mammogram results. While she is still treatable at the moment, she cannot wait any longer before breast cancer starts to slowly take away her odds at survival. It’s going to be a major hurdle in her life, but it’s something that we hope she will persevere through before things start to become so much worse for her and her family.

Elsewhere (and it’s hard to make a good transition given the subject matter), we’ve learned that Callie and Brandon are taking a very different approach now to their relationship. Rather than trying to focus on romance now that she has been officially adopted, they are finding other things to focus on. She’s working on her Fost-and-Found app (complete with a potential investment now) while also agreeing to go to a comic-book convention with AJ. Meanwhile, Brandon is looking for some ways to earn money to attend Julliard, and he may have found one using his piano skills at the end of the episode.

As for the return of Jesus, it was shocking to learn that he cam back to avoid a shocking steroid scandal and being accused of being a rat by his teammates. It also puts his status the rest of the season in flux, but we cannot imagine that the producers would go through the trouble of recasting the role just to send him away again.

Finally, we had an interesting conclusion to the saga of Jude and Connor, as Connor’s dad offered up his form of an apology to Jude for not “getting it” soon enough. This is going to be a hard part of Jude’s life for him to deal with, but unfortunately this is what happens sometimes. Circumstances get in the way. While this premiere doesn’t revolutionize the show or the genre, it does set the stage for many events to come. Episode Grade: B.
