Amazon books Miley Cyrus, Elaine May for new Woody Allen series
Woody Allen and Amazon are in the process on collaborating on a new half-hour series, and it as become significantly more high-profile as of today.
As first reported by Deadline, the streaming service has managed to secure both Elaine May (who Allen has worked with in the past) and also Miley Cyrus, making this her first live-action starring role in a series since “Hannah Montana.” With this being only six episodes, we have a feeling that she is going to be able to do this and also keep her musical commitments intact.
Allen is also going to star in the series, which is is also writing and directing. This is a hugely ambitious project for Amazon as they attempt to become more and more of a critical darling. They have already won multiple awards for “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle,” and they are planning to continue to bring exciting content to the air moving forward. While we would say that they still have a little bit of a ways to go to reach Netflix as being the king of streaming television, they are making some strides.
As for whether or not this project will be any good, that is something that remains to be seen. Still, Cyrus becomes the latest in a long line of stars making the jump to television these days. Lady Gaga starred in the most-recent “American Horror Story,” while Jennifer Lopez is back starring on “Shades of Blue” to go along with her gig on “American Idol.”
