‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Matt Smith on departure from Steven Moffat
Earlier this week, the big news came out that rocked many casual fans of “Doctor Who” to their core: Showrunner Steven Moffat will be departing the series at the end of the upcoming season 10. The more diehard ones probably saw it coming: At one point Moffat considered making the season 9 Christmas Special his last, which is why he wanted to bring about something fun with the return of Alex Kingston as River Song. It was only later that he decided to forgo that plan and do something a little bit different with season 10.
Clearly one person he impacted greatly during his run on the show is Matt Smith, who was under his eye for the entirety of his tenure. Speaking while promoting the upcoming “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (per Vulture), the actor / 11th Doctor had the following to say:
“I’m sad he’s leaving Doctor Who … He’s done so much for it and so much for me. He pretty much is Doctor Who, but the show will always endure and there’s a wonderful writer coming in and as always, it’s about regeneration and reinvention of things. But he has done so much for the show and I feel very privileged that I got to work with what I think is the greatest writer.”
Moffat did wonderful things with the show, and one of the things that probably makes us the happiest ultimately about his tenure is just how much he loves the franchise itself. We always will feel like the show is in the best hands when you have someone at the helm who wants to push himself, and try to make the product as good as it can possibly be.
