‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Selena Gomez performs ‘Hands to Myself,’ ‘Good For You,’ ‘Same Old Love’

SNL -It is rare when “Saturday Night Live” has a musical guest on their show who is just as capable of doing sketch comedy as the host, but that’s what we had with Selena Gomez this week. She’s actually had more on-camera experience than Ronda Rousey has as an entertainer, so it’s not a shock to us that the show decided to use her for more than just a performer this weekend.

When the former “Wizards of Waverly Place” star did eventually hit the stage, she did so in medley fashion accompanied by who we like to think are the Jets and the Sharks from “West Side Story.” Within the span of a couple of minutes she performed two separate singles (or at least parts of them) in “Good For You” and “Same Old Love.” Both brought quite a bit to the table in terms of being catchy songs, and her stage presence has improved a lot over the years. both of these songs are probably her most mature to date.

The downside with Selena is that unless you are a fan of her or of pop music, she’s not someone you’re going to get aboard with that easily. She’s probably a better performer than a singer, and thematically you’ve heard similar songs before.

We’ll be back later with a take on Selena’s second performance. Update: The song was “Hands to Myself,” which was certainly an attempt to be very provocative on stage by suggesting that she was about to have a threesome. Sure, it’s the pop-star way to be very edgy on this show; while it may have been the catchiest song of the three Selena performed, we just wish there was a little more substance to the lyrics to go along with. Plus, the whole bed choreography personally felt a little in the vein of trying to adhere to those edgy standards.
