We cannot say that someone singing a Keith Urban hit is necessarily the most original person in “American Idol” history. We’ve seen many people over the years performing songs originally done by the judges, with one of the biggest reasons being that these songs will get attention on the show, and also that these are songs that are probably easy for the show to license.
In the video below, you can hear 26-year old John Arthur Greene perform one of Urban’s more mainstream hits in “Somebody Like You” with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He actually sounds a little bit like Nick Fradiani, and he has a similar quality to him primarily in how he has that natural confidence that comes with working hard for many years. There are contestants this season who are certainly more raw and have untapped potential; his potential can be seen right before your eyes.
While there are always concerns about people with stage experience performing a little too “big” for a television show, we don’t see that as a concern here. We don’t see many overt weaknesses at all here, though to be fair this is only one performance. There will be plenty of other time to see how he fares later this season, since we’re almost positive that he is getting a golden ticket.
Check back tomorrow, as we should have another preview for Wednesday night’s episode posted on the site then! Let’s hope for some memorable talent this time around.
