If you’ve been following “Downton Abbey” and some of the recent headlines out there all about it, then you know that there has been discussion of a feature film at some point down the line to add an epilogue to the sixth season and the Christmas Special / series finale. However, there has never been any serious talk regarding a potential seventh season of the show on ITV.
So what is the reason for that? Of course the British press is one who likes to run amok with rumors, and there has been talk regarding whether or not the series is stopping because of the cast’s desire to do other things. After all, we do get the sense that for many of these people, there was an interest in going out and taking on different film and TV roles. However, at the same time there were others such as Michelle Dockery, who claimed that she would see the story through no matter how long it lasted.
Just to ensure that there is no longer any confusion on the matter at all, a spokesperson for show production company Carnival Films had the following to say per The Sun:
“Downton Abbey ended at season six because the producers and writer wanted to close the show on a high and that has been clearly demonstrated with the Downton Abbey finale on ITV being the most-watched show on television across all broadcasters on Christmas night. The show did not end because any of our cast wanted to leave.”
Ultimately, we do think that it is true that Julian Fellowes, Gareth Neame, and the rest of the team were the ones to pull the plug on the show. With that being said, we do think that they could have been short another actor or two had they opted to bring it back. All possibilities have to be considered
