‘NCIS’ season 13 debate: Is it time for Tony DiNozzo to get his own team?
We’ve seen the Anthony DiNozzo character evolve quite a bit on “NCIS” over the years. He’s taken on new challenges, scored a few victories, and made a good many friends who are in many ways now his family.
With all of this being said, is it time for him to evolve into a new phase of his career? Should Tony have more oversight with more people working under him? At the start of the season, we wondered whether or not Gibbs would be moved to a slightly different role in the wake of the shooting, therefore giving him an opportunity to test himself further. That didn’t happen. However, it’s something that would make for a great Tony storyline at some point before the end of the series’ run, so it’s an interesting concept to discuss now as we enter a hiatus.
The case for Tony getting a promotion – You may have heard the recent stories suggesting that new characters are coming to the show next season. Could these be people working under him? It’s one idea. The real thing you have to think about here is that with season 14 coming, it may be time to start to wonder whether or not the timing is right to introduce a new role for Michael Weatherly’s character. This is something that another long-running show in “Law & Order: SVU” has done very well over time with Benson, so it may be a smart idea to implement a little bit more of that into this character as well.
The case against said promotion – There is something to be said for having too much going on with the show, and maybe there is a fear that having a new position for Tony with new people working under him would crowd the field, especially since there are characters already on the show getting under-served. Heck, Tony is one of them! Also, you can make the argument that the series is getting still solid ratings, and if nothing is necessarily broken, why try to fix it?
Which way do you lean? Let us know below!

I don’t really care all that much for the Tony having his own team thing. I just wish he’d actually get into a proper relationship! Whilst I don’t mind the idea of Ziva returning and she and Tony rekindling their relationship, I wouldn’t mind if things actually went well with Zoe, who’s had what? About 2 mentions so far this season? Where is she? Is their relationship in trouble or is it going steady? We have no idea.
The episode that featured the return of Jeanne Benoit was surprisingly enjoyable as I didn’t care much for the whole ‘La Grenouille’ plot.
Hopefully with the worst of Ellie’s relationship drama over for the moment, this might get a bit more light in the big 300 episode or something?

Interesting question. In light of MW recent DUI, it would be prudent for TPTB to perhaps write a story line in which Tony has to go somewhere to take over a team that needs a short term leader, in case the unthinkable happens and he actually gets jail time. I would like to see him go overseas, thinking Naples. It would give Tony a taste of being away from Gibbs and being his own man. He may decide he likes it.

Should get his own team on his own show. And be married to Ziva. And take McGee with him.

Tony should get his own team – but as a spinoff. I think the addition of another team as a promotion for Tony would do just as you mentioned above and crowd the field. Michael Weatherly could easily carry a show on his own.

Tony has been back burnered for two seasons now. Tony is my favorite character and the main reason that I watch the show. Frankly I’ve lost patience waiting to see Tony actually get an interesting story and NCIS is no longer must see tv. I would welcome a departure from the status quo of the all Gibbs all the time show to something that also gave Michael Weatherly’s DiNozzo a chance to feature in a significant way for more than a fleeting moment. His character hasn’t evolved in years. It seems to me as if the current writers have regressed him for formulaic humor moments. Gibbs has gotten the lion’s share of focus and drama with McGee and Bishop also getting attention and mini arcs.
