‘Homeland’ season 5 finale: Mandy Patinkin looks ahead at season 6 for Saul
The fifth season of “Homeland” is coming to a close on Showtime Sunday night, and in preparation for that one of its stars in Mandy Patinkin is in the midst of a promotional tour of his own talking about some of themes of the season, and also some of the political reflections that are being made through the show. He has become a spokesperson in some ways for resolving some of the biggest international crises that are impacting America, and that includes the war on terror and the Syrian refugee crisis.
One of his latest comments to Variety revolves around how he would like to see one of his own viewpoints on particular matters reflected through the Saul character in the future:
“I want to see Saul make it clear to everyone in the intelligence industry that what (the U.S.) has been doing with drones and violence and warfare and revenge tactics doesn’t work … We have won the battle but lost the war. I want Saul to get the message across that the billions and billions of dollars that we have spent fighting terrorism isn’t working. We need to spend this money to give people a better life. That’s how you battle ISIS. That’s how you give people hope.”
Of course, there could still be some sort of challenge that comes through having a way to give people hope, and also translating it in a way that makes for more entertaining television. The one thing that we would say gives credence to what Patinkin is saying as a possibility is that if there is ever a show that could provide an opportunity to spread this message, this is it. “Homeland” also does have a tendency to reinvent itself after almost every season that comes on the air.
