Discovery creating ‘Deadliest Catch’ spin-off set in Newport, Oregon

Discovery -

It clearly makes sense that Discovery wants to keep discovering how to get more out of the “Deadliest Catch” franchise. With its simple focus of the Alaskan crab fishing industry, this show has become one of the most profitable and successful products in the history of the network.

With this at least partially in mind, the network announced today that they are greenlighting a spin-off series entitled “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove,” which will be set in Newport, Oregon and focus on some deadly waters off of the state’s coast and heading upward towards British Columbia. Once again, crab fishing is going to the focus, though you will see new boats and new captains in the hunt.

Per Entertainment Weekly, here’s how the network describes the show:

“Millions of dollars are up for grab in one of the last derby-style fisheries in the world, where it pays to be the fastest boat on the crab, and the first boat back to the dock to sell … But this Wild West fishing style comes at a steep price. The sea here gives life, and takes it, in equal measure.”

In other words, it’s super-dangerous. At least you can say that these are not people really in it for the fame, since they’ve been out there putting their lives at risk long before the knew or realized that there was a franchise out there who would be willing to chronicle it all for the sake of ratings.

Of course, the question still is fairly simple: Is this really a show that we need at this point, with there being so many other similar “dangerous job” shows out there? The ratings will be a judge when this premieres in fall 2016.
