‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ episode 10 sinks to yet another ratings low

AHS

We’ve talked about the ratings woes for “American Horror Story” quite a bit this season, or at least since it premiered to great numbers.

What we saw last night was something we never saw coming: The show losing to “Alaskan Bush People” with a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This is the show’s lowest rating since an episode of “Asylum” that drew the same figure, though we attribute that mostly to it airing the day before Thanksgiving. In the end, this just isn’t good given the cast and the heavy expectations. Sure, you can blame the holiday season if you so choose, but it seems as though there is one overwhelming reason why the numbers keep dropping. The show just is not that good anymore. We hate to be that blunt about it, but it’s true.

Sure, the past couple of episodes have been improvement, but this season has felt like the flashy neon sight to get us into the hotel was meant to be enough to have us handing down the rave reviews. It’s not. The story has been confusing, the writing inconsistent, and some of the cast under-utilized. The Jessica Lange hangover is official real, as is the notion that maybe this is a show that needs to take a creative hiatus.

All we hope is that the writers / producers find a way to look at these ratings as a sign that they need to give the show a serious cross-examination, and come back stronger and more prepared to handle criticism than ever. This is why we think so many of the awards-show nominations have been a bad thing for the show: The lesser competition in the miniseries category has helped to mask lingering problems.
