Why ‘Blood & Oil’ season 2 is likely no-go for ABC
Tonight, “Blood & Oil” concluded its first season on ABC, but we’re here now to be the bearer of bad news when it comes to the show’s future: It is probably not happening. The ratings throughout the first season have been poor, and with so many other series on ABC still performing well, including “Quantico” on the same night and the entire catalogue of Shonda Rhimes, there is no real need to renew a series that is drawing low numbers.
Granted, we feel somewhat bad for this show, given that it was pretty much under scrutiny and had an uphill battle from the moment it was first ordered to series. the title changed from “Oil” to “Blood & Oil,” and there were some issues behind the scenes that led to the show deviating from what it was originally intended to be.
Of course, the question we wonder is whether or not the series could have been a little more of a success story elsewhere, and for now we’re thinking that the answer here is “maybe.” We do think that it could have been a much better performer over on History or somewhere that is a little more of a different skew, and the series could focus more on the beautiful scenery and the “oil” part of the equation. The more it adhered to the ABC drama mold, the more it lost some of that identity.
Alas, we’ll probably never know. While not a confirmed cancellation, we don’t see it coming back, nor do we see it going anywhere else after the dust settles. Typically shows need to be a little more established to have a better chance at getting an extended run elsewhere.

Abc is stupid they put this on the wrong time slot, it should have been a 10 pm slot. The show was better than I thought it was going to be. Give it a chance on sat night or even Friday night at 10 pm. I am so sick of abc and pretty sick of shows on for 8 weeks and then gone for 3 months, or so. I don’t like the way they are doing things, and I will choose to stop watching abc all together.

Blood and Oil is a great show. ABC always puts good shows on Sundays then they get cancelled! Cancel Quantico! That show sucks big time. I hated it from the first episode. At least Blood and Oil had glitz glamor and excellent actors. Don Johnson was great! I am never getting involved in another ABC Sunday show no matter how good it looks! You did the same thing to Revenge! ABC needs to just shut down its Sunday schedule and let football take over because your shows don’t last!

At least the stupid network let the show air til its finale which is more than the networks give a lot of the shows. Often they yank it fairly quickly and ya never know what happened. I hope they bring it back as much of TV is crap and this was a good one.

What doomed the show was the time slot and the completely worn out Dallas drama formula which at times can be needlessly complicated and predictable. I half expected to see Cliff Barnes land in a private jet to steal the deal from Hap only to be thwarted by John Ross. It’s a shame they just plugged new characters into Dallas and moved it to North Dakota. A new network should come in and take it with Dallas and put it all together in a new show combining the shows and the interesting story lines. Make John Ross be Hap’s new adversary. I liked the inside joke early on alluding to Miami Vice when Hap reminisces about surviving the 80’s… pretty funny. Where is Tubbs anyway?

NO! Keep this show!! ABC put it on at a HORRIBLE time—up against football and Walking Dead on a Sunday night. They need to put it on during a decent time slot without competition from an established hit like Walking Dead–I LOVE this show and it DESERVES to be given a chance. Seems like ABC set it up for failure at the start by putting it on where they did. Don Johnson is such fun to watch—I need to see him back on prime time. Come on, ABC—keep this on the air!!

I don’t think they will bring it back. It seems like they tied up all the loose ends on the season finale and put an end to everyone’s story line. They did leave it to where they could bring it back but not where there are cliff hangers. But being that they went from an original 13 episodes down to 10 I doubt they will sadly.
