‘Doctor Who’ season 9 Christmas Special: New details emerge about story, River Song
The “Doctor Who” Christmas Special creeping up quickly, and with that, the BBC has gotten into the holiday spirit and is sharing some information as to what we can expect. We’re getting the much-hyped appearance of Alex Kingston as River Song, and to go along with that, we’re also having an opportunity to see just what has transpired for her since she was last on the show. Given that this is a show that does spend so much time leaping through time, it’s fairly clear that there is a lot of flexibility for change.
The network released a rather-lengthy synopsis earlier this week for the episode, and you can see what to expect below:
“It’s Christmas Day 5343, on the remote human colony of Mendorax Dellora, and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas carollers and comedy reindeer antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad, and hurled into a fast, frantic chase across the galaxy ~ pursued by River’s new husband, his Infinite Majesty King Hydroflax of the Final Cluster. Will any of them make it out alive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic supervillains, and a destination he Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time…”
While we’re certain that there will be some serious moments in this episode (it is “Doctor Who,” after all), it also seems somewhat fair to say that there will be some moments of comedy as well. Given some of the heavy stuff that took place in the final three installments of season 9, the show may want to give fans a reason to smile. Plus, it’s Christmas! Nobody wants to be extraordinarily depressed come December 25 because of a TV show.
